Funding opportunities

Overview of open calls within: NWO, ZonMW, Health~Holland, Holland High Tech

NWO – Access to care in the living environment (KIC)

Deadline for the preproposals is 24 March 2022, 14:00:00 CET
Deadline for the full proposals is 22 September 2022, 14:00:00 CET

The aim of this call is to contribute to the health and self-reliance of citizens. To facilitate and maintain this, research needs to be carried out aimed at the further development, application and effective use of technology in the own living environment that contributes to a healthy lifestyle and to transferring care and support to the own living environment.

NWO – Pre-announcement: research into minimally invasive medical interventions with the use of key enabling technologies (KIC)

The ability to participate professionally and socially in society is important for healthy ageing. A long hospital stay can limit this. Less invasive interventions can provide the outcome in such cases. Effective operations with fewer side effects shorten the hospital stay and give citizens the opportunity to quickly resume their active participation in society. At the start of next year, NWO will launch the KIC call ‘Key enabling technologies for minimally invasive medical interventions’, which focuses on the transition from invasive to minimally invasive interventions.

More information about the conditions, budget and deadlines will follow on publication of the call. It is expected that the call will be published at the start of 2022.

NWO – Open Technology Programme

The submission of research proposals within the Open Technology Programme is possible throughout the year. Closed for 2021, will open 1st of January 2022.

The Open Technology Programme focuses on scientific and technical research and is characterised by an absence of disciplinary boundaries. The Open Technology Programme shares the NWO Domain AES aim of bringing about knowledge transfer between technical sciences and users. Research proposals are examined for scientific quality and from the perspective of utilisation. Both criteria are given equal weight in the decision-making process.

NWO – Venture Challenge

Two rounds per year (spring and fall edition), deadline TBA

The Venture Challenge helps starting entrepreneurs in the life sciences to bring their service or product to the market. In a programme of approximately ten weeks, starters receive support in setting up a company and develop their idea into a solid business case. Examples from the past show that the time-to-market can be shortened through the Venture Challenge.

NWO – Take-off

Two rounds per year (spring and fall edition), deadline TBA

Take-off, the funding instrument available to all scientific fields, encourages activity and entrepreneurship within the Dutch knowledge institutions. With this instrument, academic entrepreneurs – but also starters from universities of applied sciences (HBO) and starters who are making use of knowledge from institutions for Applied Research Organisations (TO2) – can bring their innovative research results to the market. Take-off is one of the instruments for knowledge utilisation which NWO implements together with ZonMw (The Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development).

NWO – Open Mind

One rounds per year, deadline TBA

Researchers with ideas for improving the world can apply for funding through Open Mind. NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES) is looking for surprising new research ideas in which technology is used to obtain applications with a societal impact. Researchers are invited to submit out-of-the-box ideas providing sustainable solutions for global societal challenges (in line with people, planet, profit).

Horizon Europe

The final call texts for the EU program Horizon Europe, the successor to Horizon 2020, have recently been announced. You can read the entire call text for the Health pillar here. An overview of the themes can be downloaded via this link. More information about Horizon Europe can be found on the RVO website.

NWO – Perspectief

Phase 1: Sign up program initiative: Tuesday October 19th, 2021
Phase 2: Submit program design: Tuesday November 23th, 2021
Phase 3: Submit program proposal: Tuesday May 17th, 2022

The aim of the funding instrument Perspectief is to make a contribution to the creation of economic opportunities within the societal challenges and key technologies of the Mission-driven Innovation Policy. Scientists, companies and social organisations are able to implement a comprehensive research programme concerning new technology through consortia. Such a programme usually consists of four to eight projects which approach the overarching theme from various research directions, with an explicit focus on application. The parties collectively establish new lines of research which coordinate with one or more Knowledge and Innovation Agendas. In this way, innovative knowledge takes shape through an application which contributes to technological innovation offering potential economic impact for the Netherlands.
